For those who live on an island, their lives depend on the operation of the ferry that transports them to the nearest mainland. This island community needed a way to track the multitudes of both government and private documents related to their County-operated ferry in perpetuity. Usability was the most essential feature. The database allows documents to be uploaded, updated, and tagged by users to improve searchability. It also includes a prompting feature to help users find relevant key words. This document archive has been highly successful according to reports from community members.
PHP programming was used to make the questiionnaire work. It provides some error checking, directs the user through the proper sequence of questions (based on user input), works with a MySQL database to aggregate data anonymously for later research, and converts the questionnaire results into a high quality PDF document that can be printed by the user.

Many types of custom web-based programs were developed for this national political organization, but the showcase piece is a custom Content Management System (CMS). This software allowed people with minimal technical skills to enter and edit articles in the various sections of the web site through a password protected online administrative area. Both text and images were easily managed, section sidebar links were automatically generated, and the home page contents (selecting articles, photos, and their order on the page) were also easily managed. Because the software is administratively protected, all you can see are the results--the web site's content. (PDA recently moved to leased software which included donation management, so the link above leads to the site archives developed using our software.)
Software for PDA was also developed to conduct a national Presidential candidate preference poll. The software was written to carefully limit PDA's members to a single vote each in the poll, thus ensuring more accuracy and validity in the results than most online polling techniques.
Other software developed for PDA included: national contacts database management system, local chapter management sytem, automated RSS feeds for various sections of the site, image uploading and resizing tools, a user management system, and more.
